Great poker players have been known to take down huge pots because of a good bluff, even when they don’t hold any sort of strong cards. Still, this tactic is not nearly as easy as it seems on television. There are times when it is appropriate and times when it is not. Though this is certainly a sliding scale, players must show discernment and figure out when bluffing is the right thing to do during a given game.

Definition

The first thing to know is the definition. The generally accepted definition of bluffing is the art of making your opponent believe that your hand is stronger than it actually is. This comes in different forms and varying degrees, as well. Some players can pull one off with no hand whatsoever. Some players have a decent hand, but will bluff to make another player believe that they have the best hand possible. Depending upon the situation, a bluff can be a very successful move for experienced poker players.

Read your opponent

The most important thing to remember is that bluffs can never be successful unless you have a good read on your opponent. In order to successfully pull one off, you have to be reasonably sure that your opponent(s) will fold. This type of information can come in a lot of different ways. Perhaps you have found one of their tells and you know that they don’t have a strong hand. Maybe you have noticed through their betting patterns that they are a little bit weak. It doesn’t matter how you get this information. It is just important that you do get it. If you can’t be reasonably sure that your opponent will fold his hand, then you shouldn’t be bluffing.

Perception

Another important aspect of bluffing that some players fail to consider is perception. You must both understand how good your opponent is and understand how he(or she) perceives you. Good opponents are much more likely to lay down a decent hand than bad opponents. Often times, you might make a good read and try to bluff a young player, but he will call anyway. This can be one of the more frustrating things in the game of poker. On the flip side of that coin, you must know how the other players at the table perceive you. Do they think that you are a good player? Have you been bluffing so much that someone will finally want to call you? These are important questions that must be considered if you are going to pull off a successful bluff.

Truth be told, bluffing is a very risky tactic that must be used with caution. You can get into a lot of trouble if you’re reckless. Take all of the things mentioned above into considering when thinking about a bluff. If you can do it right, the bluff can be a move that destroys your opponent and his chip stack.

More Poker Strategies

If you think you’ve got this tactic “Aced” and you’re thirsty for more, then check this system out.

I guess they speak to me because I’ve been packing on the pounds as I’ve been spending more time in front of this computer and less time exercising.

I recently caught the premiere of a 4-part series entitled, “Fat Men Can’t Hunt.” The BBC Three have enlisted 8 morbidly or clinically obese Brits to live among the San Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert in Namibia. The adipose participants will build shelters, forage and hunt for the community food during their stay. The goal is to reduce their caloric intake to match that of the approx 2000 calories consumed by the Bushmen. The Brits consume perhaps 3x that.

If they don’t keel over from the heat and exhaustion and actually survive the few weeks they are there, it will be exciting to see the transformations in both mind and body of the the western bred.

Although those around me say I’m definitely NOT a candidate for these kinds of shows, I know how easy it is to slide into complacency and over-indulgence. To combat that, I will begin eating from healthier nutritional menus in the New Year….oh…..it is the New Year…well, never mind.

All kidding aside, obesity can lead to a host of serious medical conditions - Diabetes is foremost in my mind because my father was diagnosed with type II Diabetes several years ago. He initially balked at what he thought were restrictive meal plans, (I guess no donuts) but they are actually, “don’t-keep-stuffing-crap-down-your-gullet” plans. I’m just about ready to Discover Fat Burning Recipes That Melt Away Pounds! On second thought, I still love cookies. Maybe this would be more appropriate - Dr. Sanford Siegal’s COOKIE DIET™ Eat cookies, lose weight! Beware of Imitators - Buy It Here. I think I can handle that.
